I’m a writer, editor, and teacher. My novels include The Danish Girl, adapted into an Oscar-winning film starring Academy Award-winners Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander, and the #1 bestseller The 19th Wife, which was adapted into a television movie.

Alicia Vikander won an Academy Award for her role in The Danish Girl. It was nominated for four Oscars, three Golden Globes, two SAG awards, five Critics’ Choice Awards, and five BAFTAs.

In 2017 the New York Times Named The Danish Girl one of the 25 Books that Have Shaped LGBTQ Literature over the Past 20 Years

My books have been translated into more than thirty languages and honored by the the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Lambda Literary Foundation, and the American Library AssociationOut magazine has twice featured me on its annual Out 100 list of the most impactful LGBT people. I have taught more than a dozen creative writing seminars at Columbia and Princeton. And I’m a book editor, with twenty years of experience of editing fiction, history, biography, poetry, memoir, and current affairs at Random House.

My life is pretty much all about stories and words.
