Welcome. I’m a writer, editor, and teacher. My novels include The Danish Girl, adapted into an Oscar-nominated film starring Academy Award-winner Eddie Redmayne and Academy Award-nominee Alicia Vikander, and The 19th Wife, which was a New York Times bestseller and made into a television movie that has aired around the globe.

The Danish Girl has been nominated for four Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, two SAG awards, five Critics’ Choice Awards, and five BAFTAs. It is directed by Tom Hooper, who won the Academy Award for The King’s Speech.

My books have been translated into more than twenty languages and honored by the the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Lambda Literary Foundation, and the American Library AssociationOut magazine has twice featured me on its annual Out 100 list of influential LGBT people. I teach in the graduate writing program at Columbia University and until recently was an Executive Editor at Random House. As you probably can tell, my life is pretty much all about stories and words.
