I’m a writer, editor, and teacher. My novels include The Danish Girl, adapted into an Oscar-winning film starring Academy Award-winners Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander, and the #1 bestseller The 19th Wife, which was adapted into a television movie.

Alicia Vikander won an Academy Award for her role in The Danish Girl. It was nominated for four Oscars, three Golden Globes, two SAG awards, five Critics’ Choice Awards, and five BAFTAs.

My books have been translated into more than twenty-five languages and honored by the the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Lambda Literary Foundation, and the American Library AssociationOut magazine has twice featured me on its annual Out 100 list of influential LGBT people. I teach in the graduate writing program at Columbia University and until recently was an Executive Editor at Random House. As you probably can tell, my life is pretty much all about stories and words.
